Numbers are drawn onto the page, not inserted into it

Page numbering adds a small piece of drawn text to each page at the grid position you choose, using one of the standard PDF fonts. The number becomes part of that page's content, exactly like any other text the document already carried.

This means numbering is additive. It does not know about numbers already printed on your pages, and it will not replace them — a document that already shows page numbers will end up showing two sets. If you are numbering a document you have just reordered or split, it is worth checking whether old numbering is still visible before you settle on a position.

Positioning and character support

  • Standard fonts cover Latin text only. Arabic-Indic digits, CJK characters and Cyrillic prefixes cannot be rendered with the built-in fonts.
  • Numbers can land on top of content. There is no collision detection, so a document with deep footers may need a different corner or a larger offset.
  • Existing numbering is not detected. Numbering an already-numbered document produces two sequences.
  • The margin is fixed per document, not per page. Pages of differing sizes place their numbers at the same offset from their own edges, which can look inconsistent in a mixed-size file.

Can I start numbering at something other than 1?
Yes. Set the starting index to match where the document belongs in a larger sequence — useful when you are numbering the second volume of a report.
Can I number only part of the document?
Yes. Give a page range and numbering is restricted to it, which is the usual way to leave a cover page or table of contents unnumbered.
Is there a file size limit?
Not a fixed one. Numbering is a light operation, but like everything here it runs in your browser tab, so the practical ceiling is your device's available memory rather than a number we impose.
